College application. Any Idea ?

The community college I plan to attend next fall has a list of steps to admission: 1) Complete an application for admission, 2) Submit your official high school transcripts or GED certificate or college transcripts if applicable, 3) Learn about scholarships and other financial aid options, 4) Take a placement exam such as the COMPASS, ASSET or ACT, 5) Visit with an academic advisor, 6) Enroll in classes. Check out our course offerings and college catalog, 7) Pay any tuition and fees.

What do I need to be doing to apply, and when? It’s open admission. I want to make sure I have ALL the parts of the application completed correctly and in on time. When do I do these things? The college’s website doesn’t have deadlines or anything. I don’t have a high school counselor (got my diploma a year ago from an online high school) so I have no idea what I’m doing.

This is the list I came up with of things I need to do. How should it be modified?

Make list of needed financial aid forms
Get books on financial aid
Gather information needed to complete financial aid forms, scholarship applications, and application for admission
Figure cost of living, cost of education, and cost of application process
Research scholarships
EFC calculator
Submit application for admission (September)
Ask about housing
Submit transcript (ASAP after application)
Register for ACT (by November 5)
Request PIN (November)
Submit PROFILE application if applicable
Apply for scholarships (November)
Take ACT (December 11)
Gather documents needed to complete FAFSA (on website)
Begin FAFSA and submit it as soon as possible (January 1)
Contact college to see if they received everything
Then wait

Your list looks good. Can you register to take the ACT earlier? If you can, do that. Don’t worry about applying to outside scholarships too much for this reason: If you do get scholarships the college may offer you less money by deducting the monetary amount of the scholarship from the grants they give you vs. deducting it from the loans (check with the school you’re applying to though). If you want to apply for internal scholarships those can wait a little bit longer than your application (December is usually the deadline…however, some are first-come-first-served so then you would want to get them in ASAP. Again check with your institution)
