Education System in 1776, Compared to the Education System Today

In the U.S, a ___ grade level in 1776 would be the equivalent of a ___ grade level today.

The majority of children would not have got much schooling in 1776. There were ‘dame schools’ which gave a very elementary education to young children, The majority of children, both boys and girls, would have left school at an early age to go to work. Training in the practical skills necessary to earn a living would form the most important part of education for most children.

there were grammar schools which were for older boys,mainly middle class, and which gave an education mainly in Latin and Greek, which were considered essential for well-educated people in those days.

The children of wealthy families might be educated at home by tutors, and there were private boarding schools for both boys and girls. The boys schools would, like the grammar schools, onentrate mainly on Latin and Greek. Girls schools tended to concentrate more on fashionable accomplishments like music, dancing, deportment, drawing, embroidery, French etc.

For both boys and girls, good handwriting and an ability to express themselves well in writing was considered important. Reading letters of the period, you can see how much more articulate and fluent people were in expressing themselves in writing than they are today.
