Education Tax Credit with Low Income

I am single and will be claiming as independent. The cost of my schools tuition is $15000. I received $5000 in grants/scholarships. The rest comes from loans. I am unemployed and have no income (i receive support from friends and family). Approximately how much of a refund should i expect if I file my taxes – particularly with regards to the American Opportunity Credit??

If you are under age 24 and at least one of your parents is alive, you aren’t eligible for the refundable portion of the AOC and since you have no tax liability, youaren’t eligible for the non-refundable portion, so you would get nothing from the credit.

If you’re at least 24, or both of your parents are deceased, you’d most likely get $1000.
